  • Domestic violence can occur in heterosexual and same-sex relationships.

  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

  • 1 in 10 women in the United States will be raped by an intimate partner in her lifetime.

  • An estimated 9.7% of women and 2.3% of men have been stalked by an intimate partner during their lifetime.

  • Nearly half of all people in the United States will experience psychological aggression by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

  • Over half of all victims of rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner experienced some form of intimate partner violence for the first time before the age of 25.

  • An estimated 8.5 million women in the U.S. (7%) and over 4 million men (4%) reported experiencing physical violence, rape, or stalking from an intimate partner in their lifetime and indicated that they first experienced these or other forms of violence by that partner before the age of 18.

  • More than half of women (69.5%) and men (53.6) who have been physically or sexually abused, or stalked by a dating partner, first experienced abuse between the ages of 11-24.

  • Young women between the ages of 18-24 experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence, almost double the national average.

  • Approximately one in three adolescents girls in the United States is a victim of physical, emotional, or verbal abuse from a dating partner - a figure that far exceeds victimization rates for other types of violence affecting youth.

  • Globally, as much as 35 percent of women have experienced intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.
